Amazon Protection Plan

Trevor M. Davis

On Amazon today, a protection plan is usually an optional service contract handled by Asurion, not a free Amazon benefit that automatically covers every purchase. The main decision is whether you want coverage for one item or a broader monthly plan that follows eligible Amazon purchases.

What Amazon Protection Plan means now

The clearest current source is Asurion's Amazon claims page, which handles claims and plan terms for Amazon shoppers. Asurion's plan lookup also asks for an Amazon order number, which confirms that coverage is tied to a specific plan order or subscription.

The two plan types shoppers usually see

Plan type How it works Best for
Item-specific plan Attached to one eligible product, with terms that depend on the product category and plan you bought. A single laptop, appliance, camera, piece of furniture, or other higher-risk purchase.
Asurion Complete Protect A month-to-month plan that currently covers eligible Amazon products bought up to 90 days before enrollment and future eligible purchases, with a rolling 12-month aggregate limit documented by Asurion. Shoppers who want one plan across multiple eligible Amazon purchases.

What item-specific plans usually cover

Exact coverage depends on the plan, so the safest rule is to read the plan linked from your order confirmation. Still, Asurion's official FAQs show common patterns. Many portable-product plans cover accidental damage such as drops, spills, cracked screens, and power-surge failures from the purchase date, then add malfunction coverage after the manufacturer warranty period in the portable-plan FAQ. A different breakdown-only FAQ says some plans begin after the manufacturer warranty ends and only cover mechanical or electrical failures and normal wear.

What is usually excluded

Across Asurion's current Amazon-facing plan pages, the repeated exclusions are loss, theft, intentional damage, and cosmetic issues that do not stop the product from working. The current Complete Protect page also lists exclusions such as commercial-use breakdowns and accessories that were not included in the original packaging.

How claims work

Asurion says you can start a claim at its Amazon claims hub. For item-specific plans, Asurion's FAQs say you generally need the plan receipt and the product receipt. Its search tool also notes that the protection plan and the covered product may appear as separate Amazon orders, so it is worth checking both before you assume the plan is missing.

How cancellation and refunds work

For several item-specific Amazon plans, Asurion says you can cancel anytime, get a full refund within the first 30 days, and then receive a prorated refund after that, as shown in its portable and furniture FAQs. For Complete Protect, Asurion's current page says the subscription is month to month and coverage ends on the cancellation date.

When the plan makes sense

A protection plan is easier to justify when the item is expensive to repair, easy to drop, hard to replace quickly, or likely to face wear outside your normal return window. It is less compelling when the manufacturer's warranty already covers the failure you care about or when the risk you want covered is specifically excluded, such as loss or theft.

Bottom line

The current Amazon protection-plan reality is narrower than older guides often suggest. These plans are optional, usually Asurion-administered, and highly plan-specific. Read the exact coverage terms in your order, because portable, breakdown-only, furniture, and subscription plans do not all cover the same risks.
