Best External Hard Drives (Oct. 2026) - Rated by CherryPicks' Experts

Buyer's Guide: How to Choose the Best External Hard Drives

When learning how to choose an external hard drive, you need to consider what you're going to do with the drive, how fast you need to access the data on it, and how much storage you need. There are external hard drives with adequate physical protection to give you super-fast data transfers, as well as larger external hard drives that are better suited for long-term backups. The best external drives usually tick most of these boxes.

5 Things to Consider When Choose External Hard Drives

When you're looking to buy an external hard drive, there are many different factors to consider. From brand and features to storage size and speed, there are many options. It can be tough to know which one to buy - let's get started! Below, we'll discuss how to choose an external hard drive that's right for you. Then, we'll discuss how to find the best deal on your new device.

External Hard Drives: Featured Brands

If you're shopping for an external hard drive, you'll likely encounter hundreds of brands and thousands of different devices. Which one is the best for you? There are plenty of factors to consider, including speed, capacity, and efficiency. By purchasing a hard drive from a reputable brand, you can be confident that you're getting the right product for your needs. Here are a few brands you may want to consider.

External Hard Drives: Connectivity Technology

An external hard drive is a device that is connected to a computer by means of a USB port. Like a flash drive, an external hard drive is powered by the computer and can be connected to any computer through a USB port. A USB cable is required if an external hard drive does not come with one. Once connected, the external hard drive should be recognized by the computer's operating system. Then, it will need to install the necessary drivers to make it work properly.

External Hard Drives: Storage size

If you're considering purchasing an external hard drive for your computer, you have a few factors to consider before you make your purchase. The physical size of an external hard drive is important, as smaller models tend to be more expensive. Storage size is generally measured in gigabytes and terabytes. One gigabyte is equivalent to 1,000 megabytes, while a terabyte is equal to one billion megabytes.

The most common question that users ask is how much space do they need? The answer depends on how much data you plan to store. Typically, a 1TB external hard drive will be sufficient for the majority of users. However, if you're planning to store large amounts of files or backup your operating system, you may want to consider purchasing a larger model. Luckily, there are external hard drives with capacities ranging from terabytes to tens of terabytes.

External Hard Drives: speed

There are many advantages of external hard drives. They are connected on the outside and inside of your computer and are more durable and faster than traditional mechanical hard drives. Most external hard drives are available in USB 2.0 or 3.0 models, and they are both slim and compact, making them an excellent choice for expanding your storage needs. Users have given external hard drives 4.6 star ratings, making them a solid choice for speed-conscious users. However, external hard drives tend to cost more per gigabyte than their mechanical counterparts.

Various tests measure the speed of external hard drives. CrystalDiskMark and ATTO Disk Benchmark tests measure drive throughput when copying large files and smaller files. External SSDs can be twice as fast as their counterparts. For maximum speed, you should look for a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 USB Type-C or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 connections. The speed of external hard drives depends on the connection type, so you need to know what connection you will use to connect them.

External Hard Drives: Security

While external hard drives are great for storing information, you should not forget about the safety of your data. If your hard drive gets lost or stolen, you could lose important information. That's why it's important to choose a hard drive that comes with encryption software. If your hard drive comes without encryption, you should research third-party software packages. To keep your data safe, consider the following tips. Read on to learn more about security features of external hard drives.

Secure your data by putting passwords on external hard drives. Even if your data is encrypted, it can still be accessed by a malicious network. This is why you should take extra precautions when using external hard drives to store highly confidential data. Firewall and anti-virus software are basic measures to ensure data security. Disconnecting your external hard drive from the network is another best practice for the highest security. When choosing an external hard drive, look for a device that comes with a certificate of protection.

How often should I back up my data?

The only way to protect your business from losing valuable data is to make regular backups. Important data should be backed up at least weekly, but preferably every twenty-four hours.

These backups can be performed manually or automatically. You can set a number of automatic software options to back up data at set times of the day or week.

By backing up daily, you can ensure that nothing important is missed, even if something goes wrong overnight. Daily backups are especially easy if you take advantage of an IT company's data backup solution.

Most businesses need to protect contact information, customer data, billing, bookkeeping, orders, website code, custom programming, and passwords. Individual employees may also want to add data backup for documents, presentations, spreadsheets, appointments, and emails.

Some businesses have more specific needs for what needs to be prioritized for daily backups, such as blueprints, PDFs, company literature or artwork. Instead of automatically backing up to the cloud, you can save your information to a USB jump drive, external hard drive, or burn to a CD or DVD.

Which is better SSD or HDD?

If you're still not sure whether an SSD or HDD is right for you, let's review how SSDs and HDDs stack up against each other. SSDs are faster, more durable, more compact, quieter and consume less energy. HDDs are more affordable and provide easier data recovery in the event of damage.

As long as price isn't the deciding factor, SSDs top the list -- especially since modern SSDs are as reliable as HDDs. Today, HDDs are only preferred when you store large amounts of data that you don't need to access frequently. Otherwise, if you can afford the higher price, SSDs offer better performance and a faster computing experience.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of SSD?

Over the past few years, many people have opted to use solid-state drives (SSDs) in their devices instead of traditional hard drives. But do the risks of SSDs outweigh the benefits? Find out by reading some of the pros and cons below.

Advantages of SSDs

Here are a few reasons why SSDs appeal to most people:

• They use fewer moving parts, which makes them less likely to be damaged by vibration, drops, accidents, and other wear and tear.

• Fewer moving parts also means faster SSDs, providing instant loading performance.

• Their lightweight components make them easier to carry.

• They don't require as much power to operate as hard drives, extending battery life.

• While the above may look good, there are some downsides to consider when switching from a hard drive.

Disadvantages of SSDs

While SSDs have some advantages, you should also consider the following before investing:

• Consumer-grade SSDs are more expensive than consumer-grade hard drives.

• Due to the unique file system structure of SSDs, data extraction can be an extremely difficult and lengthy process.

• Since the data recovery process is so difficult and time-consuming, it can be very expensive.

• The memory chips in SSDs have a limited number of write cycles, which can result in irrecoverable data loss.

• If one of the controller chips, memory cache, or NAND-type memory chips is physically damaged, your data may be completely inaccessible.

If you're willing to take the risk, you can enjoy all the benefits of an SSD. However, you have to make sure you plan for the worst by backing up your files regularly.
