Walmart Gift Card Cash Back: Checkout Rules and Small Balances

Ronald M. Bieber

You cannot get ordinary checkout cash back from a Walmart-branded gift card or withdraw its balance at an ATM. A limited exception applies where local law requires cash redemption of an eligible small remaining balance. Otherwise, use the card for eligible purchases. Walmart gift cards, Walmart Cash rewards, and Visa prepaid cards are different products.

The practical question is what you can do with the amount left on your card. Start by checking the balance, then determine whether a local cash-redemption rule applies. If it does not, planning a useful purchase can help you spend the remainder without buying something simply to empty the card.

What Is Walmart’s Gift Card Policy?

Under Walmart’s Gift Card Terms, gift cards are not returnable or refundable and have no expiration date. They pay for eligible goods and services, but cannot purchase financial products or services, or other gift cards. You also cannot combine balances to buy a new gift card.

Think of the balance as money available for eligible shopping. It is not a bank-account balance with a withdrawal feature. That distinction matters when a website suggests linking the card to a payment service or promises to move its full value into your bank account.

Can You Request Cash Back at Checkout?

A Walmart gift card does not provide the normal cash-back feature associated with an eligible debit-card purchase. Spending part of the balance does not make the rest available as cash change.

For example, if you have a $20 gift card and use $14 for an eligible purchase, the remaining $6 stays available on the card unless a legally required redemption applies. This example explains the balance calculation; it does not establish a cash-redemption threshold.

If you use another payment method alongside a gift card, do not assume that doing so makes the gift-card portion withdrawable. Before paying, explain which balance you want to use and ask how the transaction will be handled. A checkout cash-back request and a request to redeem a small gift-card balance are separate questions.

Where Can a Small Remaining Balance Be Redeemed for Cash?

Walmart’s terms identify legally required cash-redemption exceptions in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

There is no single dollar cutoff you should assume applies everywhere. Check the current local rule and whether your card qualifies before requesting payment. These exceptions concern eligible small balances; they do not create a general right to cash out an unused card at full value.

To make a clear request at a store:

  1. Bring the card or access to the digital card. Have the current balance available so staff can understand your request.
  2. Ask about small-balance cash redemption under the applicable local rule. Calling it a gift-card return or ordinary checkout cash back may cause confusion.
  3. Ask customer service to clarify eligibility if needed. Identify the jurisdiction and ask which requirement applies to your card and balance.
  4. Keep any transaction record. Check the balance afterward so you know whether the redemption was completed.

Being in a listed jurisdiction is a reason to check the rule, not a substitute for checking its conditions. Avoid making a special trip based solely on an old online threshold or an anecdote about another customer.

How to Check Your Walmart Gift Card Balance

Walmart’s Payment Methods help page lists balance checks online, by calling 1-888-537-5503, and at checkout. Walmart also notes that balance information can take time to update.

Check before you shop, particularly if the card has been used recently. If the displayed amount does not match your expectation, compare it with your latest transaction record before treating the difference as missing money.

Keep the card number and PIN private. Do not post a photograph showing them in a public discussion or send them to someone who offers to “verify” the balance. Navigate to Walmart’s official help pages yourself rather than following an unsolicited cash-out link.

How to Use the Remaining Balance

Walmart accepts its gift cards in stores and online. To save one to your account, go to Account → Settings → Wallet → Add payment → Gift Card, enter the card number and PIN, and save it. Walmart says a card without a PIN can be exchanged in a store for one with a PIN; its help page also provides phone assistance.

Choose something you already intended to buy, such as an eligible grocery or household item. If the purchase costs more than the available balance, check how you can pay the difference before completing checkout.

For budgeting, using a $7 remainder toward a planned purchase leaves $7 of your other money unspent. That is useful even though it is not a cash withdrawal. Buying an unnecessary item just to finish the card can cost more than keeping the balance for later.

Can You Sell, Exchange, or Return Something to Get Cash?

Do not rely on a purchase-and-return strategy to convert the card into cash. Adding a debit or credit payment to a purchase is not a basis for expecting the gift-card amount back in cash. For a genuine merchandise return, ask how the refund will be issued before assuming it will help with your cash needs.

Likewise, do not assume an online exchange is a Walmart-operated buyback program. A resale offer needs its own evaluation: what amount would you actually receive, what conditions apply, and when would you have to surrender the card details? No resale percentage or successful payout is guaranteed here.

If an offer requires handing over the number and PIN before you can understand the payment terms, stop and assess the risk. A promised payout is not the same as money received.

Walmart Gift Cards, Walmart Cash, and Visa Prepaid Cards

Check the product name before following instructions about “Walmart cash back.” Walmart Cash is a rewards balance with separate rules. Instructions concerning those rewards do not establish withdrawal options for a Walmart-branded gift card.

A Visa prepaid card is also a separate product, even if purchased at Walmart. Consult its issuer’s terms for permitted transactions and any withdrawal restrictions. Neither the store where a card was purchased nor the word “prepaid” is enough to establish ATM access.

Bottom Line

A Walmart gift card cannot provide regular checkout cash back. Check your balance, ask about lawful small-balance redemption where applicable, and otherwise use the remainder for eligible purchases you need. Keep the PIN private, and do not treat return tricks, bank-transfer promises, or advertised resale values as dependable ways to obtain cash.
