Amazon Flex vs DoorDash in 2026: Pay and Work Compared

Ronald M. Bieber

Amazon Flex is usually better for drivers who want scheduled package-delivery blocks and a visible block offer before starting. DoorDash is usually better for drivers who want shorter, on-demand food and retail offers with customer tips. Neither platform guarantees the better net hourly income in every market.

Compare earnings after fuel, maintenance, depreciation, parking, tolls, insurance, unpaid waiting, and self-employment taxes—not the largest advertised gross number.

How Amazon Flex works

Drivers reserve available blocks, collect assigned deliveries from a station or merchant, and follow the app route. A block can provide clearer gross-pay planning, but availability is competitive and the route may include apartments, rural mileage, difficult parking, or undelivered-package returns.

Finishing the last stop does not always end the work: Flex policy can require returning undelivered items to the pickup location by the stated deadline.

How DoorDash works

Dashers choose offers while online or use an available Earn by Time mode. DoorDash says pay consists of base pay, customer tips, and applicable promotions. Earn by Time measures active delivery time, not necessarily every minute logged in and waiting.

DoorDash offers more stop-by-stop choice, but restaurant waits, low-demand periods, and unpaid repositioning can reduce the effective rate.

Which usually pays more?

There is no reliable universal winner. Flex can produce a stronger predictable gross amount for a reserved block. DoorDash can outperform it during busy meal periods with good tips and efficient short offers. Both can look worse after high mileage or long waits.

Track at least gross pay, online time, active time, total miles, tolls, parking, and return mileage for several comparable shifts.

Vehicle and operating differences

Flex routes often favor a car with enough cargo space and may create many package stops. DoorDash may allow cars, scooters, or bicycles in select markets and usually carries smaller loads. Platform availability, age rules, licensing, insurance, and background-check requirements vary by location.

Scheduling and stress

Choose Flex if reserving a defined block helps you plan and you are comfortable completing a whole route. Choose DoorDash if you value turning individual offers down and ending sooner, while accepting more demand and tip variability.

Can you drive for both?

Many independent contractors use multiple apps, but do not accept overlapping work you cannot complete safely and on time. Finish the current obligation, avoid distracted driving, and follow each platform's policies.

Bottom line

Amazon Flex favors block-based package work and advance gross-pay visibility. DoorDash favors flexible on-demand offers and tip upside. Test both in the same market, record all time and mileage, and keep the one with the better sustainable net earnings and stress level.
