How to Choose a Mattress - #1 Bed Buying Guide

The best mattress is the one that is right for you. You need to take into account your sleeping style, weight, and other factors when choosing a mattress.

What is the need for having a good mattress?

More and more studies suggest that along with maintaining a balanced diet and active lifestyle, sleep is recognized as an important contributor to overall good health. Sleep deprivation or sleep disruptions, on the contrary, contribute to depression, poor concentration, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Research indicates that around 1 in 3 Americans suffer from poor quality sleep and one important factor that contributes to a good night’s sleep is the right mattress. Considering we spend around one-third of our life in bed it is worth doing some research into getting it right.

The right one needs to have just the right amount of comfort and support to help keep your spine aligned while feeling relaxed. Regarding its length, it should be at least 15cm longer than the tallest person using the bed. It is therefore important to take a look at the dimensions you choose before you commit to a buy. Of course, you can claim a full refund with most companies nowadays yet still you don’t want the hustle of having to return a product.

If you sleep with a partner, you should be careful to choose a mattress that provides comfort and support for both of you. This may be problematic for some couples who vary significantly in weight. Some models come with differing comfort layers on each side of the bed, and this may be a viable option for such couples.

Another important feature is to sleep cool. More and more brands have taken this element into consideration when designing their mattresses and incorporated innovative technologies or fabrics to retain heat and improve overall airflow and blood circulation.

There are many things to consider when looking for a new mattress.

How to choose the best mattresses?

Before we decide on which is the best mattresses available in the market, there are a number of critical factors which determine our decision. Some of them are objective and others are more subjective.  Here’s a quick overview of what we take into consideration.

Value & Price

Value for money is key when we talk about mattresses. The price tag varies depending on overhead and marketing, which will result in costing more. Low-quality materials that are not durable, also mean they won’t last long and it won’t be a good value, therefore. Based on the company’s business model and the price being charged, we can reach a good assessment of the overall value of the mattress.

Feel

The overall sleep experience and feel are rather subjective. If you are a fan of memory foam for example, then you are inclined towards particular mattresses. Others however can’t stand it. Our judgment is based on not what type of feel is better than the other, but rather on the feel and describing it in detail, showing it off, and making our suggestion. In the end, only you can tell which suits your preferences.

Firmness

Firmness is a subjective measure as well since different people have different preferences of how firm or soft they prefer their mattress to be. One person might think one is firmer than average, while someone else might think the exact same one is softer than average. We try to be as objective as possible when it comes to discussing the firmness of a particular mattress, always keeping in mind the firmness scale (1-10, where 10 is the firmest).

Some manufacturers label mattresses with firmness options. Firmness labels are not accurate, so don't blindly trust the firmness label. An extra-firm mattress can be uncomfortable and aggravate back pain. Be sure to test a few types of mattresses and choose the one that fits your body best. Don't forget to check out the quality of the material used in the mattress. Make sure you have a mattress that meets all safety standards, and one that is designed for your comfort.

Motion Isolation

The extent to which you can sense movement when sleeping is important especially when you sleep with a partner. In simple terms, the more motion isolation a mattress succeeds, the less you will feel your partner tossing and turn at night.

Sleeping Hot

This is such an important issue for many people, as they are particularly sensitive to sleeping hot.  Our personal testing and data research take extra care to assess this aspect of the mattress and credit the brands which make sure you sleep cool!

Quality of Materials/Durability

There are some objective things you can assess the quality of the materials used in each model.  Durability, for example, relates to the density of the foams used in the bed.  Our intention is to carefully evaluate each material used in each one.

Eco-friendliness

We greatly value brands that take care to design based on environmentally-friendly standards in terms of their processes and materials used. Fortunately, more and more mattresses comply with such rules and become more sensitive to the environmental impact they leave as well as your own health.

Company & Brand Reputation

Of the most important features to determine if a mattress is worth investing in, is how the company treats its customers. Things like the company’s trial period, return policy, and overall customer service is critical and a factor you have to beware of, before committing to a particular buy.

Return rate

No company ever publicly discloses their return rate however, we urge the company to let us know this statistic in private so that you know there is a relatively low level of return rate for the product you purchase.

Overall Philosophy

It is not a matter of stating if a mattress is great or sucks, but more of whether if you might like it depending on your sleeping preference and other characteristics you may fancy in a mattress. Ultimately, this is a subjective process however we try to point you towards the right direction rather than impose our views.

Before buying a new mattress, you should know the size of the mattress. The size of the mattress should fit the size of the person who will sleep on it. Generally, people have a choice of two mattress sizes: King or Queen. Usually, tall people will want a King-sized mattress while shorter people will likely need a Queen-sized mattress. The firmness label is not always accurate. You should also consider the weight of your partner.

New mattresses can cost several thousand dollars, and they are often bulky and awkward to move. Considering that people spend a third of their lives sleeping, the selection of a mattress is essential. Consider the space you have in your bedroom. It is likely that you will share your bed with a partner. Mattress heights vary between brands, as well. If your partner shares your bed, you will need to find a mattress that fits their height.

Also, You should consider your sleeping habits and the size of the room. It is best to buy a bed that fits into the room. You should also think ahead to the future. If you have children or plan to use the bed for many years, it might be best to buy a slightly bigger mattress. You may be surprised at how big a difference one size can make.

Comfort

Choosing a firm or medium-firm mattress depends on your body type and sleep style. A medium-firm mattress is suitable for back and side sleepers, while a firm one is best for people with high body weights.

As you weigh more than 200 pounds, you may have trouble finding a comfortable mattress. Since many brands build mattresses with one type of sleeper in mind, it's important to consider your own body weight before choosing a mattress.

Try to choose a mattress that provides optimal support to your back. If you're heavier, choose a mattress with better edge support. You will be more comfortable sleeping on an edge if you're on a firm mattress.

The first thing you should do is decide what type of mattress would be best for your needs. You can choose from innerspring mattresses, memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses, and airbeds.

How do I choose the right type of mattress?

Mattress shopping can be a daunting task. There are so many different types of mattresses available on the market, it can be difficult to find the one that best suits your needs,

Memory foam mattress

Memory foam mattresses offer great pressure relief and a comfortable sleeping surface. They are also great for people who suffer from chronic back pain or arthritis because they provide excellent support without putting too much pressure on your joints.

Innerspring mattress

Innerspring mattresses are more affordable than other types of mattresses and offer good support for people with average weights. They also have a longer lifespan than other types of mattress materials, but they lack the support memory foam mattresses provide.

Latex foam mattress

Latex mattresses are very durable and supportive and are perfect for people with a medium to high weight. They also offer pressure relief, but they may cause some allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to latex.

What is the difference between memory foam and latex?

Memory foam is a viscoelastic foam that was developed in the 1970s by NASA. It is usually denser than latex and more expensive. Memory foam contours to your body shape, which is why it’s most popular in mattresses, pillows, and other bedding products.

Memory foam has many advantages over latex. It provides a better sleep experience for those who are sensitive to pressure points or have back problems because it contours to the shape of your body. Memory foam also has a higher level of resilience than latex, which means memory foams can be used for longer without losing their shape.

Do I Need a Firm or Soft Mattress?

Here is how a preference for softness and firmness in your mattress can help you choose a mattress that suits your body.

Density

The density of the support and comfort layer determines the mattress's superficial comfort and feel. The deeper the support, the more pressure is exerted on a specific point. Softer mattresses have a very shallow support layer with several inches of foam padding to provide a high level of comfort. Firmer mattresses have deep layers for more structural stability.

Material

Different types of material are in use when it comes to making mattresses, and they all have their own unique benefits and drawbacks. Latex is luxurious but more expensive, while memory foam is a medium choice both in terms of cost and comfort..

Comfort Layer

Density is a vitally important quality when considering the comfort and feel of your mattress. Density determines how solid and sturdy the bed will feel, which will affect its comfort.

Support Layer

The type of material that you select for your mattress can also affect how firm or soft it will feel. For example, memory foam mattresses typically offer a more firm feel and latex beds typically feel softer.

How is Firmness Measured?

The firmness of a given mattress is typically measured on a scale of 1 to 10.

• 1/10 – extremely soft, the body will sink in deeply. Very few mattresses are made this soft.

• 2-3/10 – soft, the body will sink in significantly. Typically best for side sleepers under 130 pounds.

• 4/10 – medium soft, a plush surface with good conforming, and less sinkage.

• 5/10 – medium, a balance of conforming and firmness, with little sinkage.

• 6/10 – medium firm, less conforming and a somewhat firmer feel.

• 7-8/10 – firm, no sinkage, minimal conforming. Typically preferred by sleepers over 230 pounds.

• 9-10/10 – extra firm, a very hard surface with no conforming. Very few mattresses are this firm.

The vast majority of mattresses are somewhere between 4 and 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is the range that most people find comfortable. Specialty manufacturers offer very soft and very firm beds, but these are far less common than what is typically offered throughout the industry.

Is it better to sleep on a hard mattress or soft?

The answer to this question is not as straightforward as one might think. The truth is that it depends on the person and their preferences.

If you are someone who prefers a softer mattress, then a soft mattress would be your best choice. However, if you enjoy a more firm surface to sleep on, then a hard mattress would be better for you.

A hard mattress will not have any give when you lie down on it and this can cause your joints to be compressed while sleeping. This can lead to back pain in the morning or even neck pain if your head is not aligned properly with your spine while sleeping. This issue does not occur when using a soft mattress because they have more give and will conform to the shape of your body so that you don’t experience any pressure points.

Which type of mattress is best for back pain?

The best mattress for back pain is one that is supportive and has the right amount of firmness.

A mattress that is too soft will put pressure on the spine and cause more back pain. On the other hand, a mattress that is too firm will not provide enough support to the spine, which can also lead to back pain.

The best solution for this issue is to find a mattress that provides both firmness and support.
