Buyer's Guide: How to Pick the Best Pickleball Shoes?

Pickleball shoes are specialized footwear crafted specifically for pickleball, a sport that continues to be one of the fastest-growing in the US. These shoes are distinct from regular athletic shoes due to their design and features. They typically include court-specific soles made of non-marking rubber, which is essential for maintaining traction and grip on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. This is crucial in pickleball, where quick, lateral movements and stability are key. They often have cushioning to absorb shock and reduce impact on the joints.

Key Features of Pickleball Shoes:

• Midsole cushioning: This helps guard against heel strikes and holds your feet in place during on-court changes of direction.
• Stability: Pickleball shoes often have a stability shank running the length of the shoe from heel to toe, located between the cushioning and the outsole. This helps protect your ankle from rolling and potential slips and falls.
• Traction: The shoes typically have more traction and are more durable than other athletic shoes, which is vital for injury prevention from the quick stops-and-starts and sliding in pickleball.
• Comfort: They often feature a softer outsole rubber compound, which provides good traction on laminate flooring and complements the midsole's level of cushioning.
• Fit: A proper fit is crucial for any athletic shoe. Make sure the shoes you choose provide a snug yet comfortable fit without any excessive movement.

Pickleball Shoes Facts and Trends

The rise in pickleball's popularity is directly influencing the demand for specialized gear, particularly pickleball shoes. Alongside the sport's 130% increase in search volume over two years, these shoes are becoming a hot commodity. Some models are even generating $125K monthly on Amazon, reflecting a booming market.

As part of the broader Pickleball Accessories trend, these shoes are riding the wave of the sport's growth, with over 8.9 million players in the US and a 159% increase in participation over three years. This surge is not only driving the demand for shoes but also for other accessories, as seen in the 1329% increase in searches for “pickleball accessories.” With items like balls, paddles, and sets in high demand, it's clear that pickleball's influence extends far beyond the court, shaping trends in the sporting goods industry.

How to Choosing the Best Pickleball Shoes

Choosing the best pickleball shoes involves considering several key factors to ensure comfort, performance, and injury prevention on the court. Here's a guide to help you select the ideal pair:

Determine the Court Surface:

Pickleball can be played on different surfaces like indoor wood floors or outdoor concrete. Shoes with non-marking rubber soles are standard, but the tread pattern may vary depending on the surface. For indoor courts, look for shoes with more grip, while outdoor shoes should have a durable sole to withstand rougher surfaces.

Check for Support and Stability:

Good lateral support is crucial in pickleball shoes due to the quick side-to-side movements in the game. Shoes should provide ankle stability and have a sturdy, supportive structure to reduce the risk of injuries.

Consider Comfort and Fit:

Comfort is key in any sports shoe. Look for shoes with ample cushioning, especially in the midsole, to absorb shock. The fit should be snug but not too tight, with enough room to wiggle your toes. Always try on shoes with the socks you plan to wear during play.

Assess Breathability and Weight:

Shoes with breathable materials keep your feet cooler and reduce sweat, which can be especially important during long matches or in hot weather. Lightweight shoes can also help improve agility and reduce fatigue.

Evaluate Durability:

Durable materials are important for longevity, especially if you play frequently. Check the quality of the upper material, stitching, and sole composition.

Style and Aesthetics:

While not impacting performance, choosing a style and color you like can boost your confidence on the court.

Try Before You Buy:

If possible, try on multiple pairs to compare how each feels. Walk and simulate some in-game movements to test their comfort and support.

Pickleball Shoes FAQs

What type of footwear is suitable for playing pickleball?

Suitable footwear for pickleball includes court shoes or tennis shoes that provide good comfort, grip, and ankle support and have rubber soles with a tread pattern conducive to quick lateral movements. These shoes should have good arch support to prevent fatigue during long hours of play.

Is it necessary to have specific shoes for pickleball?

While it's not strictly necessary to have specific shoes for pickleball, it's highly recommended. Proper footwear can provide improved traction, enhanced stability, added cushioning, and increased impact absorption. They are designed to accommodate the quick starts, stops, and lateral movements typical in pickleball, which can improve safety and performance.

What distinguishes pickleball shoes from tennis shoes?

Pickleball shoes and tennis shoes are very similar as both sports require similar movements and footwork. However, some brands have begun introducing shoes specifically designed and marketed for pickleball. The main difference lies in the specific design features that cater to the unique demands of each sport. For instance, pickleball shoes may have more emphasis on lateral stability due to the quick side-to-side movements in the game.

Why do you need special pickleball shoes?

Special pickleball shoes are recommended because they are designed to accommodate the specific movements involved in the sport, such as quick starts, stops, and lateral movements. They provide improved traction, enhanced stability, added cushioning, and increased impact absorption, which can help prevent injuries and improve performance.

Can you wear the same shoe for tennis and pickleball?

Yes, you can wear the same shoes for tennis and pickleball. Tennis shoes are often recommended for pickleball because both sports require similar movements and footwork. However, it's important to ensure that the shoes provide good comfort, grip, and ankle support and are suitable for the specific court surface you'll be playing on.

Is it feasible to use basketball shoes for pickleball?

It's not recommended to use basketball shoes for pickleball. Basketball shoes may not provide the same level of lateral support, stability, and grip needed for the quick, side-to-side movements in pickleball. Court shoes or tennis shoes are more suitable for pickleball.
