The Complete Guide To Finding The Best Waterproof Mattress Protector (2023)

You need to keep your mattress protected at all times to extend its life. With a mattress protector or pad, your mattress is safe. Most mattress manufacturer warranties will not cover you in case of damages caused by spills or moisture. As such, to keep your mattress in good shape, ensure it is safe from moisture and spills.

When your mattress is protected from moisture, there is less or no mold buildup and the life of your mattress is significantly extended. Again, because it is not easy to clean a mattress, the cover keeps off unwanted stains so your mattress is fresh all the time. The cover can also be placed on beds of children who wet the bed to act as a mackintosh.

A waterproof mattress protector keeps allergens and any other unwanted or harmful particles off your mattress. When shopping for protectors and pads, ensure they are hypoallergenic. You cannot clean a mattress whenever a spill occurs and this is where the protector or pad comes in. In cases of spills or when the protector gets dirty, you only need to throw them into the washing machine.

Styles of waterproof mattress protectors

Waterproof mattress protectors are offered in four basic styles to meet the needs of different needs:

• Fitted sheet style – These are ideal for adjustable beds. They are designed with pocketed corners to fit the mattress snugly. These pockets keep the protector in place even when you move a lot at night. If you have ever used a fitted bed sheet, you will find these easy to use. The only difference between these and fitted sheets is that the protector comes with a backing that protects your bed.
• Six-Sided Protector – A six-sided protector protects the whole mattress and not just the top surface. You will encase the whole mattress into the protector and close it with a zipper. You might prefer this type of a protector if you are worried bedbugs and allergens might find their way into the mattress.
• Fitted pad – A fitted pad sports the same style of a fitted sheet except a soft and thicker material is added on its top surface and to offer a soft feel. The soft feel of the top material makes different from the fitted sheet style protector.
• Pad – Pads do not cover the entire mattress. They are placed on top of the mattress to cover specific sections that might need protection. The only disadvantage with pads is that they are not easy to secure in place.

Types of materials of waterproof mattress protectors

A waterproof mattress protector has two sections; the top cover, which offers s soft feel, and the backing, which keeps water and other particles off. The top cover materials need to be soft. They include:

• Cotton – Cotton is preferred for its softness and smoothness. Most of the bed sheets and mattress covers are made of cotton and it makes sense to have it as a top cover on mattress protectors. Cotton is also absorbent for it to be used on a pad or mattress protector, it needs to have a strong waterproof backing.
• Polyester – This is a synthetic material, which is not only relatively inexpensive but can also be customized to create different feels on the protector. The material, though less soft compared to cotton, is highly breathable for a cool night and absorbs less water.
• Rayon – This is a material with some natural fibers but also with a variety of chemicals. It is preferred for its smoothness and breathability that keeps you comfortable and cool all night.
• Lyocell – This material is extracted from wood pulp. It is sold as Tencel. The material has the advantage of feeling soft. While it is not completely waterproof, it holds up well against liquids.
• Fabric blends – To get the best of all worlds, all the materials above might be blended to create a material that absorbs less liquid, feels so soft, and lasts long.
• The backing is usually attached on protectors and pads using an adhesive. This backing is usually attached on the topmost fabric of the protector. Some of the common materials for waterproofing include:
• Vinyl – This material ensures water does not leak into the mattress when it is used on protectors and pads. The only disadvantage with vinyl is the use of phthalates that might not be safe for children and pregnant women.
• Polyurethane – PU is a plastic polymer. It is attached to the top cover material through thermal bonding or lamination.

How do you clean a waterproof mattress protector?

While waterproof mattress protectors and pads protect your bed from leaks and spills, they are not safe from dirt. The protectors should be washed regularly to keep them clean and free from odors. These covers feature a cloth top with a vinyl or polyurethane backing making them easy to clean in a washing machine.

When cleaning, put your pad or protector inside a washing machine with either cold or warm water. Set the machine on delicate or gentle washing to protect the cover. Use a mild detergent since bleach might damage the backing of some covers. After cleaning, tumble dry the cover with the machine set on low heat since high heat will damage the vinyl backing on the cover. The cover can be dried together with other articles such as bed sheets as long as the machine is set on low heat.

Ironing the cover or dry-cleaning it will damage the vinyl cover, and thus this should be avoided. A new mattress cover needs cleaning before first use – this will help soften it and get rid of the packaging odors.

You can spot clean the cover when necessary, such as in case of spills. You only need to use a piece of a soft cloth and mild soap. Note that, when you wash your pad or protector frequently, it breaks down fast. While you need to limit the number of times you clean it, you still need to have a regular washing schedule. Do not clean it as regularly as normal sheets but ensure you clean it to keep odors and dirt off it. Seeing that these protectors or pads are designed with different materials, you need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to best take care of your protector and extend its life.
