The Beginner's Guide: How to Choose the Best Judo Mats?

Things to Consider When Buying a Judo Mat

There are several factors to consider before you purchase a Judo Mat. These factors include absorbency, durability, and brand. Using these factors will help you select the best mat for your practice. Whether you are just starting out or are looking to upgrade your existing one, there is a suitable mat for you.

Durability

In martial arts, the durability of a Judo Mat is of great importance. The mat absorbs a great deal of shock and stress, so it must be made of material that will last for a long time. A durable mat will be soft and comfortable to walk on and will absorb most of the shock from falls. If the mat is not durable, it can lead to injuries, which can affect the development of the martial artist.

Absorbency

The absorbency of a Judo Mat varies depending on the type of material used. Most judo mats are made of polyethylene foam or polyurethane foam. They may be made of five or more layers. The thickness of these layers is 20 to 40 mm.

A Judo Mat's thickness is a good indicator of how absorbent it is. It is best to choose a mat that is firm and durable. A mat that is too soft can cause the uke's foot to become trapped inside the curvature of the mat. This can result in ankle and toe injuries. A mat that is too loose can even cause compound spiral fractures.

Texture

If you're a newcomer to the art, there are a variety of different judo mat textures to choose from. While many judo mats feature a tatami surface, others are smooth and do not provide the same grip. If you are interested in achieving optimal results, it's important to choose a mat made specifically for judo.

Thickness

For one, the thickness of the mat is crucial, and it should be at least 1.5 inches thick. This thickness allows for adequate shock absorption. The judo mat's absorbency isn't measured in softness but in its ability to disperse impact. The mat should also allow for quick footwork and pivoting and protect against slipping.

Brand

It will be more durable and last longer when you buy a good-quality product from a reputable brand. Even if you have a tight budget, you can find a good judo mat without breaking the bank.
