Pick the Best Futon Mattress 2023: Ultimate Buying Guide

What is a futon mattress?

A traditional futon is a thin mattress which is to be laid on the floor, folded and put away. It is a Japanese mattress.

The American futon is thicker and can contain springs, cotton, foam, or a combination of all. This can be placed on a foundation, directly on the floor, or onto a frame. Having it folded and placed on a frame, the futon can serve as both a seating spot (sofa) and a bed.

The result is a flexible, supportive, bouncy yet firm mattress which provides a balanced seating and sleeping experience.

Why are futons preferred in Japan?

Japan has a culture quite different to the western. The philosophy of the country is rooted in values of simplicity and minimalism, which is not the case for Western civilization generally speaking.

In terms of their sleeping habits, Japanese almost always slept on the floor, and although European and American furniture are increasingly a trend in Japan, still many prefer traditional furniture. This means quite low tables, and sitting on the floor.

Futons are the traditional mattresses used in Japan, which however are becoming quite popular elsewhere. Westerners have come to embrace the Japanese culture as far as futons since they are useful and healthy as well.

Why buy a futon mattress?

Storage

One of the great advantages is saving space. Futons are the perfect sleeping solution if you are looking for a portable bed, unlike airbeds, and they don’t take much space when in use.

Imagine having a big foldable bed, how much space would that save? And being able to store your bed in a cupboard means you would have plenty of room during the day, so futons are very practical and convenient to have.

On the other hand, since they occupy little space and can be easily stored away, you don’t have to worry about where to put them.

Health

Experts also claim that futon mattresses are the closest to sleeping on the floor, which is considered healthy and ideal for spinal alignment and body. So, having a quality futon bed is definitely something to consider if any or all of the above seems relevant to your needs.

Interchangeability

You should keep in mind that it rather easy to personalize the futon to meet your design needs. The slipcovers in particular are a great trick to change the look of the futon completely, by just unzipping the cover and replace it with a new one.

Comfort

Don’t assume that buying a futon mattress will mean you settle for less comfort. Modern models come in innerspring with individually pocketed coils and/or foam and can make up for a great sleeping experience, as long as you pay attention to their features before buying.

Price

A great thing is you can get a high-quality product for a lower price, especially when compared to traditional mattresses.

Versatility

Futons serve a dual purpose: they can be both a sofa and a bed. The only alternative is a sleeper sofa, however, these are quite heavy, ugly, and hard to change their looks. On the contrary, futons are very lightweight, they can be easily moved and take apart and re-assemble. They make ideal solutions if you have a guest so you just unfold your futon mattress and there you have it, a complete sleep surface.

Factors to consider before buying futon

How do you choose the best futon mattress? There are different things to consider, besides different colors and sizes. you want to make sure it fulfills a variety of requirements. At the same time, a futon mattress differs somewhat to a traditional mattress.

Take a look at the most important factors to consider described below and note which brand/product best satisfies your needs. This will help determine the best choice for you.

Thickness

Choose an 8 inches thick model which is better in comparison to 6 inches one in terms of comfort. If your futon has a wooden frame, you must get a mattress that is quite thick. This type of thickness will ensure your bed performs best if you have a few extra pounds or more.

Folds

They can be bi-fold or tri-fold. Bi-fold ones will fold in two pieces, whereas trifold futons fold into three pieces. You should choose which suits you best based on the kind of frame you already have.

Look for specific instructions from the designers of the futon or, if you are going to replace one, just see the number of folds your existing futon has and purchase one with similar folds.

Usage

In case you intend to make use of your futon frequently, it is best that you get the one that has innerspring coils. This is best since the latter will ensure proper support.

On the contrary, in case your plan is to use the futon at certain occasions, buying foam and cotton batting will work fine. These types of futons provide the comfort you need on a non-frequent basis, while they are durable and don’t change their shape. Importantly, these are also quite light compared to innerspring mattresses, so you can easily transport them.

Cover

Choosing a mattress that comes with a good cover, will ensure durability. Obviously, the cover is what directly comes in touch with a person and it is important to be durable, which in turn will make sure the mattress lasts longer.

You can get aftermarket covers, for instance, synthetic fabric covers if your futon is meant to act as a sofa. These are not very expensive and last longer, while you can get them in different designs.

Frame

Quality should be a concern both for your mattress and the frame. You don’t want a big difference in terms of quality among the two.

Wooden frames

Wanting a futon mattress that will last for years, means you have to look for a solid frame. Wooden frames are such an example as in most cases they are of top quality and are solid and last longer. Of course, for this kind of quality, you should expect to pay more.

Metal frames

This type of frame is ideal if you care about decoration rather than practicality and durability. Since there are plenty of designs to match different styles, they are great and also reasonably priced and durable.

Particleboard 0r Wood Composite Frames

If you are considering using your futon mattress for no more than 5 years, or are in a restraint budget, then a cheaper option is a frame made of particleboard or wood composite frame. This is not as durable yet still aesthetically good. It can still be sturdy and supportive, yet not quite the same compared to wooden or metal options.
