A Mom's Guide to Buying a Umbrella Stroller

Why Should You Buy an Umbrella Stroller

Are you wondering why you should buy an umbrella stroller if you already have a full-sized stroller?

Umbrella strollers are the lightweight, smaller version of its cousin, the standard stroller. Umbrella strollers are, usually, made for infants who are at least six months old or capable of holding up their head up through toddlerhood.

These strollers lack many of the typical features you’d find in a full-size stroller. For example, you will probably find a storage basket, but they’re much smaller in an umbrella stroller. They might not have child snack trays, parent cup holders, or a flat reclining seat.

Umbrella strollers are ideal for older kids and traveling. If you’re headed to the beach, an umbrella stroller doesn’t take up much space in the trunk of your car. They’re great for toddlers who like to walk but get tired legs after too long.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying an Umbrella Stroller

When you start to look at purchasing an umbrella stroller, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. These questions will help you determine what features you need the most!

Do you need the stroller for shorter or longer trips?

Parents may be interested in the stroller for shorter or longer trips. The stroller can accommodate a child up to 50 pounds and is suitable for use on flat surfaces such as sidewalks, bike paths and playgrounds. This will make it easier to move around while carrying their children.

How often do you plan to use the stroller?

The answer to this question depends on the age of your child, the type of terrain you will be walking on, and how far you plan to walk. If you are going ona short trip with your baby or toddler, then it is best to leave the stroller at home. If your destination is a little further and will take up more than a few hours of walking, then bring the stroller along.

Features to Consider in the Best Umbrella Stroller

How are you supposed to pick between a full-sized stroller and an umbrella stroller? You’ll find plenty of options in the stores, so let’s narrow it down by looking at the features that matter the most.

Weight of the Stroller

Umbrella strollers are supposed to be portable and lightweight. You need to be able to lift and carry the umbrella stroller each time that you use it, and chances are, you’ll have your child in your hands as well. The weight of the stroller should be a significant consideration. You want a light, but sturdy, stroller but it’s also helpful if it has a carrying strap.

Weight of Your Child

Next, think about the weight of your child. If your child is already 40 pounds, you don’t want a stroller with a 45-pound maximum weight limit. Your child will outgrow the stroller too quickly. So, try to ensure your child has plenty of growing space in the stroller before purchasing.

Sturdy Wheels

Strollers need to be maneuverable, so you need good wheels. The ease of maneuverability is determined by the types of wheels and the type of terrain it can handle, so look for large, durable wheels made from quality materials.

Some umbrella strollers have dual front wheels which means two front wheels on each front side. That seems like good design, but it makes it hard to change the terrain. Dual front wheels also get stuck in grass or deeper gravel.

Easy to Fold

Umbrella stroller should be easy to fold and unfold, so it should be a significant factor before making a factor. Some are easy to fold or unfold, but it’s better if the stroller can be unfolded with one hand. Other strollers require more effort.

Also, the stroller should be compact when folded for easy storage. It is designed to stand on its own when folded for convenience purposes.

Comfortable

Of course, you want the stroller to be suitable for your baby. The seat should be well-padded with a good back and side support to give your baby a place to nap.

Height of the Handles

If you’re taller, the height of the handles matters a lot. You’ll be pushing this stroller, and it’s better if the stroller has the right height of the handles. It makes a comfortable experience, especially if the handles are padded.

Reclining Seats

Ideally, the umbrella stroller should have reclining seats that are comfortable because it lets your baby lean back or sit upright comfortably. Most umbrella strollers don’t recline flat for young infants, but the ideal choice should have multiple reclining positions.

Trip Duration

Something to consider is how long your little one will be in the stroller, so think about the types of trips that you’ll take with this stroller. Sometimes, you’ll go on short trips or errands, and your baby will only be in the stroller for a short period.

If your baby is going to be in the stroller for several hours, the stroller should have an adjustable leg rest and recline so that your baby can sit and nap comfortably. The canopy also matters, especially for extended trips. A canopy provides good shade on sunny days and helps to keep your baby more comfortable.

Storage

Umbrella strollers are supposed to be portable and lightweight. You need to be able to lift and carry the umbrella stroller each time that you use it, and chances are, you’ll have your child in your hands as well. The weight of the stroller should be a significant consideration. You want a light, but sturdy, stroller but it’s also helpful if it has a carrying strap.

Picking the Best Umbrella Stroller
