Truck Crane Buying Guide - What You Need to Know!

Truck cranes are used to lift heavy loads. They are also used for the transportation of goods from one place to another.

Truck cranes have a variety of benefits. They can be used for loading and unloading containers, shipping containers, and other types of cargo. Truck cranes also reduce the risk of accidents by eliminating the need for manual labor.

5 Key Things to Know Before You Purchase a Crane

Purchasing heavy lifting equipment can be a minefield for many people. Here, we’ll cover everything you might want to know when deciding to buy a crane.

Unlike your everyday car, van or truck, overhead cranes are complex pieces of equipment – each uniquely manufactured to fit the buyer’s requirements.

As well as your budget, here is what you need to know about cranes

1. What do you prefer to use the crane for?

You should consider the decision to buy a crane just like you would when you're buying a new family car. What will you use it for? What are the compulsory requirements of the purchase? What kind of extras are you looking for?

One of the first steps before buying a crane is to consider your objectives and research what you will need for them.

Take into consideration:

• What materials will you most often be moving or lifting?
• Wondering if the weight of your shipments will be heavy or light?
• What about your lift height? One or two storeys or something even higher?
• How often will you be using the crane, and for how long?

In the event that your needs change, you should also think beyond your immediate need for the crane. What if that one trick pony doesn’t work out? Even if it seems like a long shot now, you don’t want to reach the point where you’ve made a huge investment and realise that your project is only good at one thing.

2. What is your specific use of the crane?

Think about the main area your crane will be operating in. Will the work area you need be wide open or more confined? Will you be able to move around easily in all directions? Either over the top of the crane or on the ground, what does that mean to your workload? Assessing your work environment helps you understand which crane would best suit your needs. Preventing the need to adjust your work to suit the crane instead.

It is important to consider the environmental conditions you will be working in.

Example: dirt or shavings on conveyor belts may make them run slower, while grease may just be a problem for the machine.

3. Cranes contain many individual parts.

You may be surprised to find. when you order the crane, you only get the cranes. Not all lines include the rails, monorail beams, power supply and other additional elements.

Unfortunately, without a proper understanding of how cranes:

• Not applicable for the purpose
• does not follow the guidelines
• It may not be legal to use.

The end result of one or more of these scenarios is likely to be lost time and earnings for the construction company or professional, or at the very least they'll be faced with the risk of mechanical failure, damage or additional maintenance.

4. Go over your crane's blueprints with a fine toothed comb

You need to be sure you review the GA drawing of the crane before signing off on it. Signing off without looking at it could lead to major missteps. Use this quick guideline to check what's in the package and see whether the essential qualities you need are included.

Questions which you may want to consider at this point might include:

• How does the crane comply with the right Australian Standards?
• What are the costs?
• Is there anything you need to do regularly for the machine?
• If repairs are ever required, will it be easy to acquire the necessary parts?

If you’re not totally satisfied with what you received so far, maybe it is a safer move to wait before signing the GA. If you sign it off, you have little to no recourse if you find out that there are mistakes with the document later on.

5. Get to know the safety requirements and legislation for your industry

Some items of a crane that need to be checked under the laws in your State are. In Australia, there is legislation establishing what safety devices and features you should have on your crane.

If you are using a crane that exceeds 10 metric tonnes (11.02 imperial) capacity, it must be registered. The process of obtaining approval to build a crane needs engineering drawings and calculations such as the crane, structure and building. Placing an order for the crane could take up to 8 weeks and you won't be able to use it in the meantime. Anyone found to be using an unregistered crane will likely face consequences such as penalties and fines.

Of course, you'll need a driver's licence to operate your crane. If you will be doing work that is considered high risk, or are required to have a license for it, you'll need to have a High Risk Work (HRW) Licence.

So, as you can see, there’s a little more to think about before you rush into a purchase.
