Snow Globe Buying Guide - What You Need to Know!

Snow globes are a popular decoration in the winter. They bring a sense of calm and serenity to the room. These globes are also great gifts for people who love snow and want to celebrate winter. Snow globes can also be used as a way to teach kids about weather patterns or how water is formed.

There are many benefits that come with owning a snow globe, but it all depends on what you want out of it. Some people like them because they bring an extra bit of magic into their lives while others like them because they make great gifts for friends and family members who live in warmer climates.

Remember when buying a souvenir snow globe

1. Plastic or Glass

This is really a personal preference, but I find most of the plastic snow globes to appear very tacky. So I prefer glass snow globes. The best, but not necessarily the cheapest, way to transport a fragile object like glass is by paying for flights with luggage in the online purchase.

It is a good idea to ask the seller if they have any original packaging or a way to wrap up the snow globe that will protect it. If you don't have enough room in your bag or are concerned about the safety of a purchase, it might be best to ask the merchant if they offer shipping.

2. Scenes

It's best to take some time to think about the content you're going to use. One way of doing that is by looking at your virtual globe and seeing if there are any locations you want to visit. My subjects vary, but I prefer to capture monuments, cityscapes, or nature scenes.

Animals are also a very common type of subject for my photography. One thing to take into account when buying snow globes is the quality of the sculpture, since no one wants a crooked Seattle Space Needle snow globe.

3. The Paint Job

Next, I look at the quality of the painting to see if it's safe. If you're thinking about buying souvenirs for a friend or loved one on your next international trip, you may have noticed that some souvenirs are made in Asia and good quality can vary from one snow globe to the next.

4. Quality of water

For example, I analyze the quality of water. If the globe has any marine growth, mold or yellow water it's a sign of poor craftsmanship and you should avoid buying. I check for is how airtight there is, to make sure it has no leaks. Afterwards, I glance at the water's clarity. The different snow globes come with a variety of different liquids within.

Higher-end globes may just use spring or distilled water, whereas other types will use oil, antifreeze, or other chemicals to make it last longer. That's why it's important to take care of a snow globe so you can maintain its water. You might even want to replace the liquid from time to time, depending on if it evaporates out faster or slower.

5. The “Snow”

Here are some things to consider before you start working on the snow elements of your game.

• What is being used as 'snow'? Is it a white material or glitter? Are there any other options you could use to make the scene better?
• Do the pieces clump together, or can each piece fall separately on its own? Clumping can result from a range of problems involving the type of material or the chemicals in your water. It's important to treat this right away, before it gets worse. You should also take note if any are kept to the bottom curve of the globe.
• I’ve seen this before as well. But don’t worry, in most cases it takes time to create enough content and there are still plenty of other mysteries waiting to be unraveled!
• The rate in which the material falls. I have some globes where the glitter is so heavy for the liquid that it stops "snowing" within a few seconds. While I have some others made with cheaper plastic pellets that just float at the top of the globe.

6. Bases

As important as it is to pay close attention to the quality of the scene and paint job on your miniature, you'll want to make sure that the base is well-made too. Some snow globes have pretty simple bases, like those made out of wood. Some animations may be very elaborate and show a series of scenes.

The way the base adds to the look of the snow globe is important, so consider how it has an impact on the sculpt & paint quality as well. I ensure that the base is attached securely to the globe and provides a good grip for when you want to shake it up.

7. Size

Keep in mind that It's hard to carry on a snow globe. You weren’t supposed to shake your snow globe before 2012 (however I did, and nobody stopped me). Now, you can bring a snow globe that's smaller than 3 oz and packed in your 1 quart bag for liquids. Larger ones are harder to pack in luggage and it's recommended that they be shipped carefully to your home instead.

8. Placement at Home

It is best not to let children or pets get their hands on snow globes, as they contain antifreeze and can be very delicate. It's important not to expose your snow globe to extreme temperatures. If you let your snow globe get too hot, any water inside will evaporate, and if it gets too cold the water can freeze. You should also store them in a cool, dark place with some form of light and take care to try not to expose them to direct sunlight.

• Nothing is worse than looking at your walls and seeing the paint has faded.
• In extreme cases water can act like a magnifying glass, and make sunlight more powerful than usual. This can cause fires if the sunrays are concentrated into a pinpoint of light.

FAQS

What makes the best snow globe?

My biggest issue with DIY snow globes was trying to get the lights to reflect on the glitter particles. I found that tinsel glitter works best as it has larger particles and looks most like snow when it falls through the water.

How long do snow globes last?

It's rare for bubbles to form in a snow globe during its production and the result is that it will stay like that for many years. This is so unless the snow globe is placed in direct sunlight or high temperatures on a regular basis.

What is the liquid in snow globes?

A lot of people think that snow globes are just filled with water. But not all globes have a small amount of ethylene glycol in them, as some come from overseas, which means they're safe to use. This can help keep water from freezing during shipping, but ethylene glycol can be harmful if you swallow it.

How do I keep my snow globe water clear?

If so, you can carefully empty the water and refill with distilled water using a turkey baster. Earlier globes were made of water, but today the vast majority are made with a synthetic liquid - glycol (i.e., antifreeze). If it's new, a professional will have to look after the globe

Can I change the water in a snow globe?

Snow globes are a type of collectible item. They can, from time to time, lose water or water may become cloudy with dust or algae at the bottom. If your snow globe has an opening on the bottom, changing the water inside is easy. You can easily finish this in an hour with the right tools and technique.
