Most people buy tumblers without any additional reading online, but those who fancy trying before they buy may be interested in reading some basic instructions first.

Selection of Material

Careful selection of Rocks will provide me with the best finished results -Cracked or sharp rocks may need to be removed before you start work (wear appropriate safety equipment before attempting this) Rocks of the same hardness level and mixed size would be best.

Setting Up

Fill the barrel about 2/3 of the way with rocks, and add just enough water to reach the top of the rocks. The barrel must never be more than 3/4 full or less than half full. If you find that the load is too slim and lose some of it in phases 1 and 2, you can add pellets to again reach the required amount. Ensure the jar and lid are completely clean before closing the lid.

Fill the barrel with water and put it on the Tumbler. It's a good idea to watch for about 48 hours, check there are no leaks, and make sure the barrel is rotating well. Leave it charging for around 6-7 days (you can check every 24 hours if you like).

Grit Recommendations

The first stage is usually a Coarse Grind, which is typically achieved with 80 Grit Silicon Carbide or equivalent. If you want a very smooth tumbler or if you're using a vibratory tumbler, skip the first stage and go directly to the Medium Grind. The shape of these grinder teeth is usually fine, although sometimes they can be coarse. The 3-stage process begins with pre-polish and is followed by a higher grit. The pre-polish can use 600 Silicon Carbide or another type of pre- polish such as 1500 Aluminium Oxide.

The quantity of grit to use is determined by your tumbler instructions, but 1-5 tbsp/kg (or 3-5 tbsp/kg for the first & second stages and less for the third & final stages) would be a rough guideline. Generally you will use less than a kilo of rock in a 3 pound barrel, so to use the lower end of those usage rates is fine.

Add the appropriate level of liquid to your barrel, usually around two thirds or three quarters full. This is the best condition for tumbling. Investigate each stage of the process and only move on to the next one once you are satisfied that it is complete.

DO NOT tip jar contents down the sink. This can cause a blockage, leading to expensive plumbing fees - it's better to clean up outside which is less likely to end up in someone else's garden. The solid residues from this can usually be thrown away with normal household waste, and the plastic itself will not degrade under landfill conditions. Consider buying a spare barrel to keep grinding polishing different stages separately. Between stages, you will still have to wash the wheel carefully but this greatly reduces the chance of coarse grit getting into the next stage.

Polishing

Tin Oxide or Aluminium Oxide 14k are both good general purpose polishes for most types of rocks including the harder ones up to 8 hardness. If Cerium Oxide is not working well for you, then one of these two might be the better option. You might need to try a few different text editors until you find the right one that suits your project.

Cerium oxide is good for softer materials such as opal and glass as well as quartz rocks - in the 6 to 7 hardness range. For more scratch-resistant gems such as garnet, topaz, beryl or spinel, we would recommend Tin or Aluminium Oxide.

Not all rocks will polish well - a good rule of thumb is if the rock is glossy when wet but dulls as it dries out, it is a good candidate for tumble polishing - if the rock remains dull when wet, or has a rough surface or is porous, it is unlikely to polish.
