Buyer's Guide: How to Choose the Best Gaming Keyboards

Mechanical keyboards have many advantages: They are more satisfying to type on, more durable, and offer more room for personalization than standard keyboards. But they're much more than that, and if you want to make sure you're getting the best keyboard for you, there are a few things you need to know first.

When you're looking for a new gaming keyboard, there are many choices to be made. You must choose between different layouts, switches, and keycaps. Choose Wired or Wireless and then decide on the type of layout you want. Next, decide between a gaming keyboard with a single or multiple USB ports, or a wireless one. A gaming keyboard should be durable enough to withstand the abuse that comes with frequent button mashing.

Gaming keyboards: Pick a Layout

When shopping for a gaming keyboard, there are several things to consider. First, you should consider your preferred typing style. Some gamers find that larger keyboards are more comfortable. Others are concerned about ergonomics and macros. There are a variety of layouts to choose from, and it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. The size of a keyboard will depend on the size of your laptop's screen, so choose wisely. A full-size keyboard will feature a full-size QWERTY section, a number pad, dedicated function keys, and four directional cursor keys.

Functional layouts are a key-map between physical keys and software events. This type of layout usually matches the visual layout of the keyboard, as pressing a key results in the expected result. Many operating systems allow you to switch between functional and visual layouts, such as by using the language bar. But be sure to read the manual and choose the layout that best suits your preferences. You'll appreciate it when you choose the right layout for your gaming keyboard!

Gaming keyboards: Choose Switches

Aside from a mouse, you'll need a gaming keyboard, too. You should choose between mechanical and membrane keyboards, depending on your preference. The best switches for gaming are the Cherry MX Speed and Kailh Red. However, these switches are notorious for making noise, and if you're a die-hard typist, you'll probably want to opt for something quieter. Razer Orange and Cherry MX Brown switches are both good choices if noise is an issue.

Some gamers prefer linear switches because they provide a more accurate, faster, and quieter input. Linear switches tend to be quieter, but they're not as responsive as a mechanical keyboard. However, if you're a beginner or want to switch from a membrane keyboard, tactile switches might be just what you need. A mechanical keyboard, on the other hand, will make a loud noise that will annoy those around you.

Cherry MX Reds and Blues are two of the most popular types of mechanical switches. These are ideal for those who want to be able to quickly hit keys while still having good feedback. Generally speaking, these switches have the lowest actuation force of any of the Cherry MX switches and are therefore great for gamers who want to be able to bounce from key to key quickly and nail each command. These switches are often the most expensive, and many gamers swear by them.

Gaming keyboards: Wired or Wireless

There are a few benefits to wireless gaming keyboards over their wired counterparts. Wireless gaming keyboards are more convenient to use in a variety of locations. They plug into a standard USB port, which eliminates the need for a wire and allows you to switch between two or three functional computers with ease. Wireless keyboards also tend to be cheaper than their wired counterparts. Which is better? Here are some pros and cons of each type of keyboard.

While wired keyboards are less expensive, they are often more difficult to use. A wireless keyboard is more versatile, but it requires a battery and should be plugged into a computer in a convenient location. Another benefit of wireless gaming keyboards is that they don't require a plug, which is essential if you play fast-paced games. Wireless keyboards also tend to have a shorter battery life, so you'll need to be careful of running out of battery power.

Gaming keyboards: Hot-Swapping

A key benefit of hot-swappable gaming keyboards is that the switches can be easily changed without the need for soldering. These keyboards also extend the life of the keyboard by preventing double-typing and runaway repetition. This makes them an excellent choice for anyone looking for a keyboard with hot-swappable switches. Here are some reasons why you should consider hot-swapping:

The best gaming keyboard for newbies is the Logitech G502 hot-swap. While it's not the cheapest keyboard available, it offers superb build quality and a vast range of switch options. The only downside is the RGB backlighting, which could be a little more vibrant. You can also swap the keycaps from ABS to PBT, which makes hot-swapping a viable option if you need to change up the style of the keys.

A hot-swappable gaming keyboard is a great investment. These keyboards allow you to change out the switches on-the-fly, which allows you to customize your gaming setup. You no longer have to worry about buying multiple keyboards that have different switches. Hot-swapping keyboards also save you money, as you won't have to buy a new one every time you want to change a switch.

Gaming keyboards: RGB Lighting

RGB lighting for gaming keyboards has many benefits, ranging from improved game play in low lighting conditions to customizable RGB color backlighting. These lighting options allow gamers to customize the appearance of their keyboards, allowing them to customize each key individually, or create a whole spectrum of colors to choose from. There are many benefits to RGB backlighting, so it's worth exploring the options available. These options can increase the overall aesthetic appeal of your keyboard, and can even enhance the visual effect of horror games played in dark rooms.

The most notable benefits of RGB lighting for gaming keyboards are their ability to provide an improved gaming experience. These keyboards are highly durable and can be used for a variety of different activities, including video games, music, and multimedia. The keyboards also have a plug-and-play feature that makes them easy to install. Some models even have LED backlighting to add a bit of extra flare to your gaming sessions.

Besides providing a better gaming experience, RGB lighting also allows you to see the keyboard's keys even in low-light conditions. In addition to improving visibility, LED lights on gaming keyboards help prevent incorrect key presses in dark gaming environments. They also add to the aesthetic appeal of your gaming setup, so you can display your keyboard in a cool, dark room. Just make sure you choose a keyboard with a high-quality RGB lighting.

What size keyboard is best for gaming?

Mainstream keyboards now come in three main form factors: Full Size (104 keys), Tenkeyless (87 keys) or TKL and 60% (68 keys). There are other more niche layouts like 75%, 65%, and 40%, but the three above are the most common.

Full-size or 100% keyboards, which are the most common. They usually have 107 keys, a row of function keys and a number pad on the right. These keyboards are perfect for most people who do number-heavy work, and most of us end up using it to enter PINs.

Players who play MOBA and RTS games benefit the most from a full-size keyboard. These games often have a ridiculous number of features that would benefit from being mapped to number keys.

Plus, the full-size keyboard has plenty of room for extra conveniences like dedicated media buttons and sexy volume dials. The downside of a full-size keyboard, however, is the sheer size of things.

Space is at a premium, and unlike many YouTubers, most don't have a large desk where these keyboards can sit. Additionally, gamers who play shooters and action games will find the distance between the mouse and the WASD keys too large to be comfortable. That's where the TKL keyboard comes in.

A Tenkeyless or 80% keyboard occurs when you remove the number pad from a full-size keyboard and reduce the width by about 20%. A keyboard of this size is best for most people who only enter numbers occasionally. It might not seem like much, but removing the keypad creates a ton of room to move the mouse around.

However, in addition to losing the dedicated number pad, you usually lose those handy dedicated media keys. It's really annoying when playing games and listening to Spotify in the background, for example.

Is linear or tactile better for gaming?

The debate between linear and tactile gaming is always a topic of discussion. The main difference between the two is that linear gaming uses a controller to make the player move through the game, while tactile gaming uses touch-based controls.

The debate between linear and tactile games comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer to play with a controller while others prefer to use touch-based controls. There are also those who like both but have different preferences for each one.
