Dog Boots Buying Guide - What You Need to Know!

Some of my dog-loving friends and some of my non-dog-loving friends find it funny when I mention I was wearing boots for dogs, but they don't know how difficult these boots are to get out at night. People have asked us why dogs would need shoes on their backs paws. We just think they're so adorable.

Of course, but dog paws are not magic either - they aren't unbreakable barriers between the dog's foot and the outside world. Dog boots provide a wide range of benefits for parents, especially if their pup is up to lots of fun outside. Just like your own feet, your dog's paws are soft and can get injured easily. This is especially the case if you go running with them or spending a lot of time outside in extreme weather. Boots can help you keep your paws safe from cuts, burns and frostbite.

However, I don’t want you to just take my word for it. So I reached out to dog boot companies and a dog behaviorist to answer the 10 most common queries typically asked about dog boots.

1. What type of dog boots should I buy? Or what dog breeds should wear dog boots?

Dogs are generally only bred to withstand certain climates. They don't usually cope well with extremes within the same area. Your dog’s paws are the only exposed part of its body that can come in direct contact with anything on the ground. When we think of our dogs lapping at their paws as a dog habit.

A rescue worker was asked the question of "What we need most right now?" to which they answered "Dog boots." Working dogs often wear boots to protect themselves and their paws from injury.

I had a hard time finding my dogs boots because they were afraid of anything touching their paws at first. In all fairness, I had gotten them used to wearing hats, clothes and touching their feet but never put anything inside of them. When I was researching for this post, I talked to three dog boot brands and also Jill Breitner, creator of the Dog Decoder app. Jill recommends taking it slowly and making it a positive experience.

1. “First, bring out the boots and let your dog sniff them.” Jill says. “Give the dog a treat once she touches the boots or smells it. I'll hide something, and you go find it. When your pet shows interest in something, even if it’s just sniffing or pawing at it, give them a small treat. Jill recommends doing this a number of times (perhaps 15, spread out over the course of your lunch break) with a small treat each time. This can be something as simple as giving them their kibble with lunch."Each time, bring it out as new from behind your back,” she says. “If the dog is really engaged and knows how to fetch and bring back, then play with the bootie." First, hold the object and throw it about 10 times. After a short break of 5 to 20 minutes, then repeat for a few more hours or even overnight.
2. Next, feed the dog a treat by holding it near its feet. Give treats this many times and then do the same for each foot.
3. Slip on a treat, take it off, then slip it back on. Give your dog 15 little treats, then do the same for their feet. Jill suggests making sure your dog is doing well at every stage before moving on. If they're not succeeding, go back to the last phase they passed successfully and reward them with a treat. It's important to spend some time working on less difficult tasks first before moving on to more complicated ones.
4. Put a boot on your dog's foot and gradually increase the time they are comfortable with it there. After they are comfortable with it being on their foot for a few seconds, ask them for something or tell them to wait before taking it off.
5. When your dog is comfortable with having the dog boots on for a minute or two, tie it or use the Velcro and give 10 treats. Otherwise, go back to the start of your diet and avoid anything that was restricted. Wait a couple of hours or a day, then resume dieting where you left off.
6. Put one of the dog's hind paws on the doggie boot and then ask her to fetch or to play with kitty litter. Play for a few minutes, and take off your bootie
7. Next time, try putting on two pairs of dog boots and monitor your pet's behaviour. If no signs of discomfort are observed, move to step 3 and repeat the process. Ask her about her favorite game and offer to keep playing it after she takes her shoes off. "They will walk funny at first, lifting their paws higher than normal," Jill says. "Just don't worry about it." By playing with your dog and going for a walk with them, you can improve the bond between you and your pup while also shedding some of those extra pounds. The key is to be as active as possible. Play and then go on a quick walk around the block. "If all goes well," she said, "Voila! Go for a walk."
8. Jill stresses the importance of stopping at any sign of anxiety and returning to a success in order to avoid the dog becoming stressed. Signs of anxiety include things like lifting your paws, cowering in fear, lapping your lips and showing what's referred to as 'whale eye'. This can be displayed through walking away, pulling away from a person's touch or contact and more. In some more extreme cases it could involve growling and even going so far as to hide.
9. Jill says that some signs you'll want to look for to see if your dog's ok with wearing boots are a happy & excited dog, energetic and engaged when they're trying the booties on. Be alert to an open mouth (lips are pulled back, gums are showing), soft eyes with eyelids that briefly blink, direct eye contact, a wiggly body and ready for play.
10. Jill concludes, "Using high-value treats, such as chicken or hot dogs, is a great way to encourage your chickens and can help keep them around longer." To encourage your dog to work for the treats, you mustn’t feed a meal or only feed half a meal. The dog will usually be very hungry in this case.
