So, whether you're a beginner or an experienced Cord Reel shopper, this blog post has something for everyone!

Factors to Need to know when buy a Cord Reel

Type

You can find many different extension cord reels in your local hardware store. They include:

interior: You can buy an indoor extension cord that is either grounded or not, and they come in a variety of lengths. They are typically low-power and are intended for everyday household appliances like lamps and clocks. However, if you need something more heavy-duty, you can purchase a power cord with a higher power that can be used for tougher appliances.

outdoor: These outdoor winders are perfect for any job, big or small; They can resistant to harsh weather conditions and freezing temperatures.

contactor: Specially manufactured for construction sites, contractor's reels can endure extreme cold and heat. They have high power output and are usually resistant to oil and chemicals.

Length

It is crucial to ascertain how much extension cord you will need before making a purchase. If you cannot find a size that suits your needs, it is better to err on the side of buying a longer reel rather than a shorter one. There is an array of sizes from which to choose, so select according to your individual requirements. A 25-foot reel is the smallest available, while at the other end of the spectrum you can buy a 60-65-footer.

The friction from the wires creates heat, and that increases the longer the cable is. To get the best performance, you have to weigh your needs against how long of a cord you'll need.

AMP Capacity

10 amps is typically sufficient for standard household appliances. However, if you want to use larger electronics, you might need a higher ampere capacity.

Use this formula to determine watt or ampere requirements: Watt capacity = ampere x voltage. So, if you want to plug a 120-volt, 1,000-watt device into the extension cord tray, it must have a power rating of 9 amps (1,000 watts /120 volts) at least.

Number of Plugs

If your power reel doesn't have multiple outlets, you may experience a few issues.

To start, determine the amount of devices you need to plug into the extension cord, then ensure you have one or two additional outlets available.

This way, you won't have to buy another power cord when adding more tools in the future--you'll already have an outlet available. To avoid having to purchase another power cord, make sure your extension cord has three outlets. Some even come with USB ports for added convenience and the ability to charge your mobile phone or other devices. For safety purposes, try using a plug with three cores that is grounded.

Gauge number

For medium-sized equipment, high-spec cables that don't require much current are usually used because they provide current with minimum resistivity and obstacles. On the other hand, for heavy workloads such as workshop machines like chainsaws, thick wire is a better option. These types of wires can carry large loads of current while also increasing their resistivity and heat output. However, increased heat output is not ideal light equipment.

Most extension cords are available in 14, 16 and 12 AWG sizes. 1AWG is suitable for home use, while 12 AWG is popular in heavy machine workload.

FAQs about Cord Reel

Is the outdoor extension cord reel safe in the rain?

The outdoor extension cord reel is safe in the rain as long as it is made of a water-resistant material. Look for a reel that is labeled "outdoor" or "weatherproof" to ensure that it will be safe in the rain.

12 Gauge or 14 Gauge Extension Cord Reel, which is better?

12 gauge and 14 gauge extension cord reels are good choices, but the 14 gauge reel is a bit better because it can handle a little more power. It's also slightly thicker and less likely to kink. However, if you're only going to be using your cord reel for light-duty tasks, the 12 gauge reel will be just fine.

How long can the extension cord be used?

Although the exact time from one reel to another may vary, the best reels usually last for several years.

How to use extension cord reel Safety?

• Make sure the power cord is not damaged. The wires in the extension cord are very strong and designed to resist damage, but they may still be cut and split. This will expose the wires below, which is very dangerous. They should be checked every time they are used. If the power cord shows signs of damage, it should be discarded and replaced.
• Buy from reputable suppliers. Make sure that the extension cable drum comes from a brand you trust and has passed all necessary safety tests.
• Check the plug. Before turning on the power supply, be sure to completely insert the plug of the extension cord into the power socket. This will prevent sparks and electric shock.
• Keep electricity away from water. Water and electricity will never mix. The reels should be waterproof, including rainwater.
• Store the extension cord carefully. When the extension cord is not in use, it should always be stored in a dry indoor workshop.
• Unplug when not in use. After using the expansion reel, make sure to unplug it. Some people have a light to show that the power is reaching them. This light should be turned off before unattended.
• They are not a long-term solution. If you have been using the extension cable drum in the same place for several months, then it may be time to consider rewiring and get a permanent socket. They are not meant to be a permanent solution.
• Do not use more than one. It is unsafe to plug one extension cord into another. Instead, you should get a reel with a longer rope. If you need to work away from the power supply, you must use gas or battery-powered tools.
• Check the wattage. The wattage of the extension cord must be equal to or higher than the tool you use.
• Do not overload the extension cord. If the telescopic cable drum has three sockets, it is only suitable for three power tools, so do not insert four into it. This will lead to overload and may be dangerous.
• Carefully insert the plug into the socket. The sockets of extension cords may be damaged, which makes them unsafe. Therefore, please pay attention to how to insert the plug.
• Avoid overheating. When too much current flows through the extension cord, it will overheat, so please take measures to avoid this situation.
• Watch the wires. When there are 50-foot-long wires in your workshop, it is easily damaged. Therefore, you need to know its location and take measures to protect it. It should not be driven by vehicles, because its weight will damage it.
• Don't drag it. Do not move the retractable cable drum shell by grasping the power cord and dragging it. This will put pressure on the power cord and may break it. Always pick it up through the shell and handle (if any).
• Avoid tripping hazards. Any type of long cable is in danger of tripping. Don't loosen more rope than you need, and roll it back as soon as you finish. Wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted installation reels are a good way to avoid this danger.
